This store is built around the Game Commission calendar. The rifle opener after Thanksgiving is the big one, so the deer pages lead with manual-action centerfire rifles in .30-06, .270, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor and .243, plus lever guns for the laurel. Bear season brings heavier bolt guns. Spring gobbler means 12 and 20 gauge turkey shotguns. Squirrel, rabbit and grouse fill the rest of the year with .22 rifles and light field shotguns. Remember that semi-automatic rifles are legal for small game and furbearers in Pennsylvania but not for big game, and that the Special Regulations Areas around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are shotgun and muzzleloader country for deer.
Buying is straightforward. Pennsylvania has no purchase permit and no waiting period; your dealer runs the state PICS check at pickup. To carry a handgun concealed or in a vehicle you need a License to Carry Firearms from your county sheriff (the Police Department in Philadelphia), at 21 and over. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door.
The county checklist covers 22 Pennsylvania cities, one per county: who issues your LTCF, your Wildlife Management Unit and the nearest Game Commission ranges on State Game Lands.
